Let Him Bear Your Load

Do you ever feel incapable of following Jesus?

Unworthy of His calling?

Not good enough?

Not strong enough?

You’re not alone.

In Exodus 4:10-12 (ESV), when God appears to Moses through a burning bush, Moses protests
when God calls him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Moses says that he “is not eloquent”, and
is “slow of speech and tongue”. Moses had a stutter.

But God knew. “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind?
Is it not I, the LORD?”

God knows about your struggles and imperfections, too.

Yes, following Jesus and doing what He tells you is hard. Too hard, in fact. We can’t do it.
Bearing the weight of this world, and getting to Heaven, is impossible.

But of course, if we could do it on our own, then what would be the point of the Gospel?

We don’t have to do anything to earn His love (Ephesians 2:8), but we’re called to manifest, or
display, God’s glory and kindness for all to see.

And yes, that’s often easier said than done. Maybe you get teased for being a Christian. Maybe
speaking isn’t your strong point, like Moses. Maybe pride gets in the way of you following your
Savior.

But Jesus knows we aren’t perfect. He invites us to simply walk beside Him and let Him bear the
load. (Matt. 11:28-34)

Picture a little cow, barely older than a calf, struggling under the weight of a heavy yoke. The
cow is trying so hard to pull the weight, but she’s exhausted and she just can’t do it on her own.

Then a huge and muscular ox gets strapped into the yoke next to the calf. He just took all the
weight upon himself! Now, all the little cow has to do is walk beside him and follow his lead.

This is what Jesus has done for us. He has taken the full weight of sin upon Himself and all we
have to do is believe in Him and follow where He leads us. (John 3:16-17)

Jesus wants us to surrender everything, even our weaknesses, to Him. He knows all about our
shortcomings, and He loves it when we ask Him for help.

He knows we are imperfect, yet He invites us to be a part of His perfect plan. Isn’t that amazing?

One of my grandpa’s favorite sayings is “God does not call the equipped, He equips the called.”
This means that it doesn’t matter if you feel you’re not worthy. God can use you even in your
weak, sin-marred state, and He won’t just leave you stranded. He gives you the tools you need
to obey Him.

God designed you with a purpose in mind. He gave you specific strengths and put you in just
the right place to grow His Kingdom. He knows you inside and out. He has made you into a
masterpiece (Psalms 139:13-16) and every day as we follow our King, He makes us look more
and more like Him. (2 Corinthians 3:18)  You are lovely because He loves you.

That is what makes us capable of following Jesus.
